Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy dedicated to assessing and treating conditions related to the pelvic floor—a group of muscles and ligaments located within the pelvis, spanning between the pubic bone and coccyx. This muscle group is hardworking and often underappreciated. It plays a key role in organ support, bladder and bowel control, sexual health, and core stability. These muscles can become weakened, tight, or uncoordinated due to childbirth, surgery, injury, stress, or lifestyle factors. Pelvic floor physiotherapy treatment involves retraining the pelvic floor muscles to contract optimally.
At FreeForm Physio, we offer inclusive, whole-person care to help you reconnect with this essential part of your body in a safe, supportive environment.
Common concerns we treat include:
Leaking with coughing, sneezing, running, or laughing
Urinary urgency, frequency, or nighttime voiding
Constipation or pain with bowel movements
Pelvic organ prolapse symptoms (e.g., pressure or heaviness)
Pain with intercourse, tampon use, or pelvic exams
Prenatal preparation and postpartum recovery
Core weakness, diastasis recti, and pelvic-related back or hip pain
Pelvic floor physiotherapy often involves an internal examination to accurately identify the issue and directly evaluate the pelvic floor muscles.
What to expect from an internal exam:
A key part of assessing the pelvic floor is understanding how the muscles are functioning internally. With your informed consent, we may offer a vaginal (or rectal, if applicable) internal exam.
This is done privately, with clear communication at every step. The internal exam allows your physiotherapist to assess:
Muscle tone and tension
Strength and coordination
Areas of tenderness or dysfunction
Ability to contract and relax the pelvic floor
Internal exams are never mandatory, and we’ll only proceed if and when you feel comfortable. Alternative external treatment options are always available.
We take a trauma-informed, body-aware approach—your safety, consent, and autonomy are at the center of everything we do.
